Del Rey News
Del Rey is happy to announce that the 7's season was a tremendous success. With five tournaments this summer Del Rey had three top two finishes, and took home the Cup Championship at the Tacoma Aroma tournament on July 31st.

Summer Recap
The first tournament of the summer was the evergreen tournament held at Evergreen state College in Olympia. Del Rey started off the day on a rocky start losing to Beach A's in their first match. As the day wore on Del Rey fought back and won their next 3 matches to make to the competitive finals against Beach A's. Del Rey fought hard coming back in the final minutes but still lost the contest to superior athleticism. Del Rey played great team ball throughout the day showing that good rugby can beat great athletes.

The next tournament was the Pacific Northwest Invitational. Del Rey brought a scrappy side and played well in their first 2 matches. A slight miss handling of the ball here and there and a few missed tackles but still coming away with victories. In the third game against Beach 2's it was a different story. A tough contest to the very end saw Del Rey lose out by one conversion. The missed tackles and ball handling proved to be the deciding factors.

The following tournament in Ferndale Wa. saw Del Rey bringing a very young side to the Can Am tournament. This is a tournament that Del Rey has won twice and was looking for a third. With good ball movement and fantastic support Del Rey won their first game surprising the Canadian travelers. The following game saw Del Rey a bit shocked by the size of their next opponents, the Horsemen, and fell directly into their game plan, slow and condensed play where our speed was not a factor. The third game however Del Rey battled back and was able to make the cut to get into the playoffs. The first round of the playoffs was a rematch with the Horsemen. This go around Del Rey did not fall into the trap. Spreading the ball wide and great chases saw Del Rey screaming into the finals. The final match against host Chuckanut was a game to see. Chuckanut took an early lead but Del Rey fought back scoring 3 tries in the remaining 2 minutes to tie the game. In overtime with fatigue setting in both teams had chances at scoring, but in the end Chuckanut came out on top with great ball movement.

The next tournament was the great tour to Abbotsford Canada. With the huge spectacle of a tournament Del Rey was taking no prisoners. With focus and determination Del Rey took up a strong squad with the help of two Eastside Axemen and a Valley Kangaroo thrown into the mix. With only 11 players on a 12 man roster fatigue was going to be a factor. Del Rey came out of the blocks like a track star with their hair on fire, blowing out their opponent 42-0. With confidence getting to us and not much shade under the trees on the hill Del Rey barely warmed up for the second game and lost again to Surrey in disappointing fashion 19-7. In the third game Del Rey was determined to make it to the playoffs and play in the stadium. Showing tremendous heart and a never give up attitude Del Rey went up early, down late, and with a come back try at the end tied the Breezers from Bayside. With the tie breaker being tries scored, Del Rey lost out 8-9.

The following weekend at the Tacoma Aroma 7's saw an almost completely different team then Del Rey had up in Abbotsford. With fatigue and other commitments Del Rey brought another scrappy but confident side to this tournament. In the first game against Tacoma 2's/Ft. Lewis team, Del Rey was taking no prisoners and won easily 42-0. With that win under their belts Del Rey started talk of getting serious and seeing just how well we can do. In the second game against Spokane, Del Rey went up early and never looked back, winning by a score of 36-0. With friendly rivals Eastside in the final pool game, the winner went on to the cup semi-finals. The two teams fought it out hard for the first 4 minutes of play and then the speed of Del Rey and it's quick ball handling saw them start to pull away. If not for a last minute heroic try Eastside would have fallen without a shot being fired, but the final score was Del Rey 29 Eastside 7. Heading into the semi's Del Rey looked focused to take home the trophy. With their next game against host Tacoma we knew we were in for a fight. The first half of play saw Tacoma using their size to push around the smaller side of Del Rey and leading at half time 12-5. The half time changes for Del Rey saw a much more experienced and much bigger side take the field. With this new side on the field and Tacoma not being able to keep up with the fresh legs of Del Rey, we were able to pull away and win the game 31-12.

With the final being held on the showcase field Del Rey was looking nervous. The opposing team being a compiled group of Samoan ruggers from around the area their size and speed look daunting. Del Rey again was on the short end of the stick at half time and if not for great support from Dave Fredrick in the final seconds of the half Del Rey would have been down by 10, but instead were down 10-5 at halftime. Again with the more experienced side coming in at halftime Del Rey started to show its colors once more. With great break away tries by Kellen Gordon, Jeremy Ling Del Rey went on top quickly into the second half. After Will Christopher came in filling the extremely large shoes of Kellen after his break away quickly proved that he not only is, but is going to be a great addition to the Del Rey roster for years to come, by scoring a great try of his own. After a tremendous steel by Jonathon Douglas he connects with Jeremy Torres on a 40 meter scamper that saw the two passing the ball back and forth around would be tacklers. With a few more hands touching the ball closer to the try zone Jonathon Douglas went in for his 6th try of the day. Del Rey allowed one more final break away try by the fighting samoans but in the end were victorious winning the tournament and taking home the cup.

Great 7's Season Del Rey. Looking forward to the next go around.
